TAT and Korean tour operators team up to attract 'quality' tourists

THAILAND - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and tour operators in South Korea are teaming up to boost the number of visitors to Thailand, but new products are needed.

International tourists including Koreans are continuing to shift their travel plans away from Japan over radiation fears, after a tsunami in March damaged a nuclear power plant.

Many quality tourists want to visit Thailand and expect to see new products and receive better service.

To meet this demand, TAT held a special seminar on "The Korean Tourism Market" yesterday, aimed at boosting travel between the two counties.

Some key travel operators from South Korea such as RTS Group and Mode Tour participated in the event and said they would like Thai operators to create new products and packages to meet the demands of quality tourists from Korea.

"Korean tourists now prefer to make shorter trips and expect better service when they come to Thailand," said Akkapol Pruksawan, adviser to TAT.

He added that TAT would work with private operators in South Korea to build and promote the Thailand brand as well as revise marketing strategies to attract more Koreans this year.

Last year, 805,179 Koreans travelled to Thailand, an increase of 29.7 per cent from 2009. South Korea remains one of top contributor markets for Thai tourism.

Most Koreans coming to Thailand limit their visits to only two destinations, Phuket and Pattaya. Average spending per head was Bt4,452.

Akkapol said both tourist numbers and spending should improve this year as many more Koreans would come to Thailand.
