Singapore Changi Airport is voted the World's Best Airport

Singapore Changi Airport has been voted the World's Best Airport at the 2013 World Airport Awards held at Passenger Terminal EXPO in Geneva. This is the fourth time Changi airport has achieved the top prize - last claiming victory back in 2010.

The awards are voted for by airport customers from around the world and this year the survey garnered 12.1 million responses.

"In winning this prestigious accolade, Singapore Changi cements its place as one of the world's favourite airports and Skytrax offer their sincere congratulations on what has been a fantastic year of achievement" said Edward Plaisted, Chairman of Skytrax. "Changi airport continues to be a leader and innovator within the industry and this in our opinion, is a key reason why it has remained ranked amongst the top-3 airports for the last 14 years of the awards."

Mr Lee Seow Hiang, Chief Executive Officer, Changi Airport Group said, “Winning the Skytrax World's Best Airport award again is an immense honour for Changi Airport. It is as much a recognition of the passion of the 32,000-strong airport community that is the backbone of Changi's collaborative and well-oiled operational processes , as it is an affirmation of our mantra in putting our passengers at the heart of all that we do."

"At Changi Airport, we believe in focusing on the needs of our passengers and providing them with only the best of airport experiences, with our exciting slew of offerings that have been introduced through the years that add a touch of delight for our passengers. Our success has been possible only with the contributions of our partners. We thank them for their fullest support and our passengers for their vote of confidence."

For Changi, it was a triple success, as well as securing the top prize, it also picked up the awards for Best Airport in Asia and Best Airport for Leisure Amenities. "The vast array of leisure and entertainment facilities really standout at Changi and serve to highlight the extent to which the management has gone to ensure maximum levels of passenger satisfaction. We only have to look at the fact that Changi served more than 50 million passengers for the first time during 2012, to see that it continues to attract customers and maintain its place as one of the world's leading hub airports" added Plaisted.

Last year's winner, Incheon International Airport achieved a second place finish in the global rankings, and achieved major success in taking the awards for Best Airport Staff Service - Asia and Best International Transfer Airport.

"The staff service award for Asia is one of the surveys most competitive categories. Since this award was introduced in 2010 Incheon has managed to win 3 out of 4 years, indicating a remarkable level of consistency" said Plaisted.

The award for Best International Transit Airport this has become an increasingly important prize in the awards programme. The number of airports focussing product, service and infrastructure developments on attracting transit passengers is increasing, and the fact that Incheon has achieved success in this category for the second time in 4 years indicates that the airport continues to be a world leader in terms of over passenger satisfaction."

For the first time in 6 years, there was a change to the top-3 global airlines with Amsterdam Schiphol Airportaccomplishing an excellent third place finish in the survey.

"We congratulate Schiphol on the fabulous achievement of breaking into the top-3 global airports" said Skytrax. In securing a top-3 finish, Amsterdam Schiphol also ensured it retained its awards for Best Airport in Europe and Best Airport in Western Europe.

"The easy airside transfer process continues to be a popular reason for many passenger votes. Schiphol alongside KLM has developed and implemented an effective self-service transfer process and this has resulted in significant improvements in passenger feedback. Whilst staff service remains an important feature, efficiency is also crucial and Schiphol has managed to create an environment of good efficiency and effective staff service" Skytrax added.

Hong Kong International Airport achieved fourth position in this year's global rankings being usurped from the top-3 for the first time in 12 years - the airport did however achieve top-5 finished in 6 of the awards categories indicating that it continues to be highly regarded amongst passengers.

Beijing Capital International Airport retained its top-5 position in the global rankings and with it took the award for Best Airport in China. "Beijing Capital continues to steadily improve year-on-year in terms of customer satisfaction. Passenger traffic has risen fairly quickly since the airport opened in 2008 and rapid expansion is often the antithesis to a good standard of product and service quality. Maintaining a position amongst the top-5 global airlines should certainly be seen as an achievement for BCIA management and staff and Skytrax congratulate the airport on this consistent performance" said Edward Plaisted.

Munich Airport again proved popular with survey respondents finishing in sixth place in global standings and securing the awards for Best Airport in Central Europe and for the first time, being named as having the Best Airport Dining Experience. "Munich Airport has been a consistent performer in the airport survey for several years and the awards for Best Airport in Central Europe and Best Airport Dining Experience are well earned recognition. With 45 catering outlets around airport, passengers can sample food from across the globe, as well as taking the chance to try traditional Bavarian specialities" said Plaisted.

Zurich Airport secured seventh place in this year alongside the awards Best Airport Baggage Delivery and Best Airport Staff Service - Europe. "The award for Best Airport Staff Service - Europe is a significant achievement for Zurich and played a large part in the airports strong finish in the global awards table. Whilst, a primary focus for many passengers is moving through the airport processes quickly, survey respondents indicate that this is frequently combined with high standards of frontline service quality in Zurich whether this is at check-in, security, immigration or the terminal coffee shop" said Plaisted.

"Baggage Delivery is, as always, a very emotive issue for passengers and Zurich continues to perform well in this award year-after-year. Clearly the primary interest for most passengers is the speed in which the baggage is ready for collection after a flight and Zurich should be rightly proud of its status as the World's Best Airport for Baggage Delivery" said Skytrax.

Vancouver International Airport improved its position by one place in the overall global rankings moving up into eighth in this year's survey, and this ensured it retained its award for Best Airport in North America. "Vancouver International Airport offers passengers a good all-round experience and scores well for both staff service and terminal ambience. Maintaining a top-10 position in the awards is no mean feat - particularly when looking at the competition from airports in Asia and Europe and the management at Vancouver should be heartily congratulated on this achievement" said Edward Plaisted.

Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) stormed into the top-10 of the global survey this year moving up 5 places to ninth and in doing so it took home the prize for World's Best Domestic Airport - a new award introduced for 2013. Haneda also secured the award for Best Airport Terminal Cleanliness for the first time this year.

"Tokyo Haneda's reputation has continued to grow since International flights were re-launched several years ago, but it is from domestic passengers where we received the majority of positive feedback. Whilst International operations expand, it is the well-established domestic experience that continues to be popular with the overall efficiency of the airport and excellent transport links being two of the key reasons passengers voted for Haneda in this year's survey" said Edward Plaisted.

"With greater passenger awareness on issues of hygiene, Tokyo Haneda's achievement of having the Best Airport Terminal Cleanliness is certainly something the management and staff should be proud of. To secure the top-prize in such a competitive region is testament to the attention to detail and consistency of cleanliness standards and this is clearly something appreciated by passengers using this airport" said Plaisted.

Heathrow Airport achieved its best ever result entering the top-10 airports for the first time and also scooping the awards for World's Best Airport Terminal for Terminal 5 and for the third year running the prize for Best Airport Shopping.

"Since Terminal 5 opened in 2008 Heathrow Airport has embarked on a steady process of upgrade and improvement to the older terminal facilities, achieving a ranking upgrade to 4-Star Airport status at the end of 2012. Clearly, a significant part of this improvement has been the success of Terminal 5 and the award for the World's Best Airport Terminal for second successive year is an excellent achievement. Celebrating its 5th anniversary this year, passengers clearly recognise that T5 has matured into one of the world's leading passenger terminal facilities" said Edward Plaisted.

"Completing a hat-trick of Best Airport Shopping awards is a fantastic accomplishment for Heathrow and passengers clearly feel the shopping experience and quality of outlets continue to improve. On a global basis, we are seeing an increasing amount of activity in developing airport shopping facilities and Heathrow continues to find itself as the premier airport in the World Airport survey" added Plaisted.
