SOUTH KOREA. Business Traveler (U.S.) has named Incheon International Airport the ‘Airport with the Best Duty Free’ for the third consecutive year.

The award recognizes the overall excellence of Incheon’s Airstar Avenue duty free shopping complex.

The prominent business travel magazine had bestowed the ‘World's Best Duty Free’ title on Airstar Avenue last October for the second consecutive year in its Asia Pacific edition.

Incheon International Airport is the world's biggest single duty free sales location, generating US$1.53 billion in revenue in 2011, a figure set to rise sharply in 2012 when official figures are revealed.

Every year, Business Traveler surveys its subscribers on four categories such as airport, airlines, hotel, and city and ranks them. The magazine is published in ten different regions, including the US, Asia Pacific, China, and the U.K.

Incheon International Airport Corporation (IIAC) said that the US edition is the largest among the magazine’s regional titles, with over 180,000 issues, and therefore has the greatest impact.

Business Traveler attributed Airstar Avenue’s recognition to the innovative creation of various “multi-layer shopping experiences” for foreign tourists in line with the global ‘Korean wave’ craze.

In 2012, Incheon International Airport handpicked a number of Korean brands admired by foreigners and opened Korean-wave shops and shops dedicated to small businesses. Openings included Ogada (a traditional Korean tea cafe) and Bizeun (a Korean rice cake store). Traditional Korean souvenir shops were strategically allocated around the main concourse zone.

Much credit was also given to various experiences and events that entertain travellers with Korean culture in many parts of the airport. These include the Korean Cultural Street with a traditional Korean double-storied pavilion; the Arrival Hall Cultural Street with a display of Korean nature and history; and diverse traditional Korean music performances.

Other reasons for Incheon’s awarded included the careful layout of shops in terms of passenger follow; 24/7 duty free information kiosks (touch screen); seasonal discount sales and gift events; and other efforts to be customer-friendly and optimise the shopping environment.

Incheon International Airport Corporation President & CEO Lee Chae-wook said: "We owe the honourable award to the ceaseless efforts of management and employees of the airport and duty free shops. We will continue to do our best to offer the best-quality shopping facilities and services and retain the top status year after year.”

The Moodie Report is pleased to announce two important new projects.

The first is a new annual study on South Korean travel retail – the industry’s biggest single market.

Written by The Moodie Report Chairman Martin Moodie, who has been visiting the country each year since 1989, the report will profile all the established and new market players; examine the sector's major challenges and opportunities; comment on its pioneering use of social and digital media; examine the Korean wave; and provide on location interviews with airport, downtown and inflight retailers in Incheon, Seoul, Busan and Jeju.

The report will be produced as a dedicated e-Zine, complete with video and audio elements, and also reproduced in hard copy form for the TFWA Asia Pacific show in Singapore this May.

The Moodie Report is also delighted to announce its first e-Zine dedicated to the important concept of 'Sense of Place', the showcasing by an airport and its commercial operators of a city's, region's or country's crafts, culture, history, heritage, tastes and traditions. If you think your airport, store or food & beverage outlet/s should be included, please e-mail Martin@TheMoodieReport.com
